Life In Newberry

Barklin House in Daytime

Inn-keeping at Barklin House is a lifestyle choice.  Newberry and the Barklin House have been our home since  May 1992.   We are only parting with the inn so that we can embark upon another renovation project, this time, a listed historic commercial structure on Main Street.  We love living in Newberry.  You will, too!

Newberry is located just four miles from Interstate 26, roughly half-way between Columbia, SC and the Cities of Greenville and Spartanburg, SC.  Newberry was named one of the 50 best small towns in the Southeast in 2005.

 Newberry offers:

The City of Newberry is charming, with shady neighborhood streets lined with older homes, many pre-dating The War Between the States.  In addition to the historic downtown business district,  the city boasts a bustling shopping area on the outskirts of town, where one can find a Super Wal-Mart, Lowe's, any number of national fast food franchises, automobile dealerships, chain pharmacies and other national and regional retailers.  Newberry is listed in Sweitzer and Fields The 50 Best Small Southern Towns.

Newberry is also home to Newberry College and Barklin House is less than 3 blocks from the campus.  Living in a college town means access to such amenities as a free lecture series, lively athletic events, entertaining recitals and performances and even the possibility of attending or teaching a class or two.

The County, (also named Newberry), is home to other delightful small towns and villages such as Prosperity, Silverstreet, Little Mountain, Pomaria and Whitmire.  Become acquainted with your surroundings by planning to explore:

The City of Columbia, South Carolina's capital and home to Fort Jackson and the Columbia International Airport (CAE), is less than an hour away.  Visit the award-winning Zoo, the Columbia Museum of Art and too many music, performance and sports venues to list!

Head west on I-26 instead and you will pass by Clinton, home of Presbyterian College and be in either Spartanburg or Greenville in about an hour, including access to the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport (GSP) in Greer.  Both cities offer dining, entertainment and shopping to satisfy all your interests.

Newberry enjoys a temperate climate with long pleasant seasons of spring and autumn, a bit of a heat-wave during July and August (that's why air-conditioning was invented!) and just a few brief weeks of chill and dreary winter.  It hardly ever snows.  Garden and golf nearly year-round.  Make Barklin House your new home!
